It's time for another presentation in the Arizona Historical Society's Summer Lecture Series, "Cold War and Hot Politics in the Old Pueblo." Tonight from 7 to 9, historian Joe Alvarez will be giving his speech, titled "Korea: The First Hot Spot of the Cold War," at the Arizona Historical Society Main Museum, 949 E. Second St. The cost for the lecture is $6, $5 for AHS members and $3 for students with ID. Funds raised for the series go directly to support educational programs for schools and the community. Faculty and staff have free use of the Student Recreation Center from today through Aug. 20, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Recreation Center will be closed August 15-17. Today is the opening of Willie Bonner's "Recent Paintings" exhibit in the Memorial Student Union's Arizona Gallery, on the second floor. Bonner, who painted the mural on the exterior of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. building, is a graduate student in the painting program in the UA art department. This will be Bonner's first solo exhibition in Arizona. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Sunday, and the exhibit runs until Oct. 5. The UA Graduate College will present an opportunity for UA and AHSC employees to register as non-degree graduate students. Employees will be able to register for the fall 2000 semester in the Memorial Student Union's Rincon Room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The registration is non-degree only and some classes may need departmental permission.
