Rocket From the Crypt

Group Sounds

(Vagrant Records)

Grade: B+

Rocket From the Crypt has recorded an album that will not only please a live crowd, but will also rock any sound system it reaches.

Originally, the group sounded like a bunch of out-of-control rockers with trumpet and saxophone in tow. With raspy vocals, repetitious guitar lines and a small horn section, the whole blend was completed with a heavy focus on the rhythms of each song.

Group Sounds begins with a good slap-in-the-face track called "Straight American Slave," which takes the listener from comatose to an upright and locked position. The songs have a more refined quality, allowing the listener to hear a more mature band while still keeping the fun locked in tight.

The song "Carne Voodoo" has simple lyrics and a good party feel to it. It contrasts will other songs such as "Ghost Shark," which combines a string section with some more serious-sounding music. Despite this difference, the album still flows well from track to track.

Group Sounds is no ordinary ride on the musical roller coaster. It is bigger, better and makes anyone want to ride it over and over again.

Although RFTC has been around for 10 years, it is still keeping true to its sound while treating itself and its listeners to a feast of new songs. RFTC took its old music and threw it into a blender to mix things up. The end result sounds better than ever and leaves the listener wanting more.

Every song on the album, whether starting slow or fast, keeps a pace that guarantees a good listen.
