The No. 2 UA women's swimming and diving team did the improbable over the weekend - they repeated as Pacific 10 Conference champions in dramatic fashion.
The Wildcats captured the day's final event - the 400-yard freestyle relay - to secure the conference title in Federal Way, Wash.
Arizona finished with 1,229 points, while UCLA was second with 1,130. Stanford, expected to be among the top competitors, finished in fourth place with 1033.5 points.
Stanford had won the Pac-10 Championships every year since the meet's inception in 1987 until last season, when the Wildcats managed an improbable upset.
In the deciding relay, the UA team, consisting of juniors Jenny Vanker, Caroline Killian and Sarah Tolar and freshman Kristen Brennan, finished with a time of 3:18:39, an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
Individually for UA, sophomores Beth Botsford and Amanda Beard placed second in the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breast stroke, respectively.
The UA diving team, which features both men and women, continued its dominance of conference opponents.
In men's diving, UA juniors Omar Ojeda (614.55 points) and Ruben Vaca (533 points) took first and second place, respectively.
On the women's side, freshman Claire Febvay finished third on the platform with 441.45 points.
