Abram hits for cycle in yesterday's loss
The Arizona baseball team has become accustomed to playing in warm weather at home at Sancet Field. This weekend, UA proved that it could win despite less-than-favorable weather conditions in Pullman, Wash.
The Wildcats battled through snow and strong winds in their three-game series against Washington State to take two games.
Arizona's (23-17, 6-6 Pacific 10 Conference) lone loss came yesterday, when, despite hitting five home runs and having a player hit for the cycle, the Wildcats dropped a 17-14 decision to the Cougars.
In the game, sophomore Matt Abram became just the ninth Wildcat to hit for the cycle - recording a single, double, triple and a home run in the game - in school history.
Junior right fielder Shelley Duncan also added his NCAA-leading 15th home run in the loss.
The Wildcats, however, had more success in the first two games.
In Saturday's 11-7 victory, the game was delayed for 49 minutes after seven innings, but that did not stop Arizona's bats. In the game, every Wildcat starter had at least one hit.
Freshman pitcher Sean Rierson had one of his best outings of the year, allowing four runs on nine hits in a seven-inning performance. The win improved Rierson's record to 4-4.
The Wildcats had a tougher game Friday, though, eventually prevailing in the 10th inning with an 14-11 victory.
Senior Daryl DeSalvo pitched the ninth and 10th inning to earn his second victory of the season.
In the game, six Wildcat starters had multiple hits, while five players scored two or more runs.
