U.S. servicemen gave DNA samples to police investigating sex attack

By The Associated Press

PERTH, Australia - About 75 U.S. servicemen have given DNA samples to detectives investigating a sexual assault on a woman at a party in a small Australian town, police said yesterday.

The servicemen, from the U.S. Air Force base at Kadena in Okinawa, Japan, were in Australia for a joint training operation near the town of Exmouth in western Australia last week.

In all, about 100 people have provided DNA samples taken using mouth swabs, police said.

The alleged sexual assault took place after a party early Saturday morning, police said. No charges have been filed.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Bordin said many of the U.S. servicemen were interviewed by Northern Territory police during a stopover in Darwin, Australia before they returned to Japan.

Police said they may have DNA results within 24 hours.

Bordin said DNA sampling was routine in a sexual assault investigations.
