Junior right fielder hit for cycle in three-game sweep of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

UA junior right fielder Shelley Duncan was named the Pacific 10 Conference's Player of the Week yesterday following a weekend series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in which he hit for the cycle.

Friday against Islanders, the junior went 5 for 5 with five runs scored and six RBIs and hit for the cycle by logging a single, double, triple and home run in his five at-bats.

Duncan's Friday performance was a part of a three-game tear in which the junior went 8 for 13 (.615) with a double, triple, three home runs and 10 RBIs.

The award was the second of Duncan's career and the third by a Wildcat this season. Matt Abram earned the honor on March 19 and took the award last week after hitting for the cycle.

Duncan, who holds the Arizona record for career home runs with 50, is four longballs shy of tying George Arias' single-season record of 23 blasts in a season.

Currently, the 6-foot-5 right fielder leads the nation with 19 home runs.

Duncan has been one of the program's most consistent producers when healthy. He missed the second half of last year after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery.

In the procedure - named "Tommy John" elbow surgery after the first professional player to experience the operation - Duncan's right elbow ligament was replaced with one of his own healthy wrist tendons. Duncan missed all of last offseason recovering from the procedure.

Duncan, a relief pitcher prior to surgery, now plays right field exclusively.
