Tomey is wretched coach

To the editor,

What a performance by Ortege Jenkins on Saturday night! He showed everyone that his off season training and workouts have made him a better quarterback.

Uhhhh, I don't think so. Ortege Jenkins proved again that he is a terrible quarterback who can't handle pressure and who can't throw the football to any of his receivers. Every time Ohio State came with a blitz and put pressure on him, he dropped back 15 yards and by the time he dropped back that deep they were able to tackle him or he would just run around like a clown.

It seems that every time he needs to make a big play or there is pressure, he flusters on the field. I also like the fact that it seems every time he drops back to pass he decides to run the ball and act like the running back too. O.J. thanks for that putrid performance! One more note ... Dick Tomey you are the worst coach in the Pac-10. Wait a minute! Now that I think about it, you are the worst coach in the country.

SAS out of line

To the editor,

It's about time someone ended the reign of terror that is Students Against Sweatshops, or at least spoke out against them. Friday's open meeting was the last straw. Regular students do not show up to such events because they know they will be dominated by special interest groups such as SAS. They come with their signs, their long boring speeches, their empty rhetoric and their misplaced indignation. What is it exactly that SAS has a problem with? Apparently they are pretty mad at President Likins. They think he's not doing his part to stop sweatshops. Apparently accepting money from Nike constitutes a moral felony. Let's take a closer look at these empty claims though. First of all, sweatshops are not slavery. They may not be up to the standard working conditions that we are accustomed to in America, but they are obviously better than any other job these people could get. That is how an open job market works. If these "sweatshops" were not the best available jobs for these employees, they would absolutely not work there. If these factories were shut down, many people would be far worse off than they are now.

Furthermore, accepting sponsorship money from Nike does not make UA an accessory to any alleged wrong-doing. The contract with Nike helps the university fund all of its intercollegiate sports, including all those teams that lose money every year. Without sponsorship money, either these teams would have to be folded, or students' tuition would have to be raised even higher. This might not have an impact on the lives of the members of SAS, considering the fact that they have time to stage sit-ins for weeks at a time, but other students actually have to work to get through school.

At the open meeting, Likins raised a valid point about student protests. He said they were a good concept and that he used to be involved in protesting for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. Those are serious issues that students should be concerned with. Members of SAS need to get a life and stop harassing people like Likins who have more important issues on their plate.

Colleges go overboard

To the editor,

Nicholas Zeckets' article criticizes Men's Health magazine for ranking schools where women "fully express themselves" as anti-male. Mr. Zeckets fails to mention that the schools listed in the article have worked diligently to earn that reputation.

Dartmouth is in the process of banning its time-honored Greek system.

UC-Santa Cruz created an intellectually vacant "History of Consciousness" Department to accommodate radical feminist/ avowed Communist/ former fugitive Angela Davis.

The Hoya at Georgetown fired its only conservative columnist for daring to question whether a Jesuit institution of higher learning was an appropriate venue for the radical play "The Vagina Monologues," which features the statutory rape of a 13-year-old girl by an older lesbian.

Antioch College, however, is the undisputed champion of the politically correct laughingstocks. They have a policy requiring verbalized permission for all sexual contact, including hugging, kissing and hand holding. I kid you not. Incidentally, they chose to honor cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal as last year's commencement speaker.

Radical feminism even rears it ugly head close to home. Just ask former ASU Theater Professor Jared Sakren what happens when you teach the "sexist" works of Shakespeare.

Blaming this little article for creating divisions that "don t already exist on campus" is a joke. They exist and will continue to until male-bashing ceases to be the national pastime of humanities professors.
