Wednesday

It's Wednesday which means it's "hump day" - just two more days to go until you reach weekend bliss. Why not spend the afternoon doing something relaxing - head over to the UA Museum of Art in the Fine Arts complex today between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to check out the "Contemporary African American-Artists" exhibit. The show features a selection of artists from the museum's collection such as Ron Adams, Emilio Cruz, Margo Humphreys and Renee Stout. The exhibit runs through July 15. Call 621-7567 for more information.

Some acts truly need no introduction - check out John Cowan, headliner of the 2000 Tucson Folk Festival Headliner and former member of Newgrass Revival, along with Def Hefer tonight at 8 at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress St. Tickets are $10 in advance. Call 798-3333 for more information.

If you haven't already gotten a ton of outdoor adventure ideas from our brilliant article about Mt. Lemmon, try the Sabino Starry Night hike every Wednesday evening at Sabino Canyon. The hike, sponsored by the Sierra Club, is said to emphasize moments of silence and a reconnection with nature by escaping from artificial light and electronic devices. The hike is seven and a half miles round trip. Call 577-2444 after 1 p.m. for more information.

Thursday

At the risk of really pissing off the people who actually do love Tucson in the summer time, we'll avoid this joke and get right to the event - "Don Juan in Hell," a one-act play produced by George Bernard Shaw, shows tonight at 7:30. The play, which runs through July 15 at the Live Theatre Workshop, 5317 E. Speedway Blvd., represents Shaw's controversial view of Hell. Tickets are $12. Call 327-4242 for more information.

Friday

Even if you aren't news junkies like us, you have probably heard that the planet Mars is closer to the Earth than it has been since 1988. Take time out to visit the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium on the UA Mall today and tomorrow from 7:30 to 10 p.m. and take a peek at the big and bright planet Mars. These two, free viewing sessions will be held on the grassy lawn area just outside the planetarium. The Flandrau Theater will also present its new show "Mars Quest" at 7:30 along with the viewing. Tickets for the show are $5 for adults, $4 for children ages 13 and under. Call 621-3646 for more information.

Saturday

We know you're in Tucson during the summer, but let someone else sing the blues - the Tucson Jazz Society will perform its last show of the Summerset Suite called "Bad News Blues" tonight at 8. The idea of the show is to allow its listeners to "get back to the roots of Jazz music." Those interested should head down to La Placita Village, 110 S. Church Ave. Tickets are $7 for members of the society and $14 for non-members. Call 903-1265 for more information.

Yes, we know - this event is already described in full in the Arts section. But it's just so cool that we had to list it twice - the UA Wind Ensemble, which will launch its first European tour in July, will perform a free "Bon Voyage Concert" tonight at 7:30. Presented by the UA School of Music and Dance, the concert will feature the 45-member ensemble which was the only university band selected to perform in the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference in Lucerne, Switzerland. Check out the show tonight at the Proscenium Theatre at Pima Community College West, 2202 W. Anklam Rd. Call 621-2998 for more information.

If you're a super-huge fanatic of the fourth of July, get the holiday started a little early today at 7 p.m. at the Tucson Raceway Park, 12500 S. Houghton Road. This year's show will feature the NASCAR Super Late Models, Grand American Modifieds 50 Laps and Factory Stocks as well as a fireworks show that will take place sometime between race events.
