New CatFest venue may present space conflict

Arizona Summer Wildcat

Vouchers to be distributed to eliminate seating issues

For the first time, Wildcat Welcome Week's annual CatFest concert is scheduled to be indoors.

The show, sponsored by the University Activities Board, Associated Students of the University of Arizona, Residence Hall Association, KAMP Student Radio and Greek Life, will change its venue as a result of the cancellation of past concerts due to rain.

"In the past it's always rained so we moved into Centennial (Hall)," said J.J. Kruglick, director of UABconcerts. "We had Sister Hazel last year and Blink 182 the year before, but both shows got rained out."

However, an attempt to curb the weather could result in a potential shortage of seating for the concert.

"There probably won't be enough seats since (Centennial's) capacity is only 2,456 (people)," Kruglick said. "People should get there early to get vouchers."

These vouchers - which can be traded for tickets the day of the show - are still free but will be handed out in a first-come, first-serve basis. If the tickets are not redeemed by the evening of the concert, the voucher-holder is no longer guaranteed a seat.

The vouchers will be available in front of the Centennial Hall box office starting at noon on Tues., Aug. 21. Any tickets not redeemed with a voucher will be re-distributed the evening of the show to ensure fair ticket distribution.

" When you pick up vouchers, you will be given best seating available," Ray Quintero, Associated Students president, said. "First in line for vouchers get front row."

ASUA members will man tables outside Centennial Tues., Aug. 21 through Thurs. 23 for students to pick up their vouchers.

" That way we have an opportunity to talk about all the other activities happening throughout the day," he said.

Still, Kruglick still considers it a lucky venture that CatFest will still be free to students.

"It's definitely free thanks to generous sponsorship from the Tucson community," he said. "Some years, we've done three or four bigger, local bands. This is the first year we're doing local bands and a major act."

Quintero added that three local bands will play on a stage erected in front of the fountain at Old Main.

"That way we're close to the concert and we can get everyone over there (to Centennial)," he said.

Tickets for CatFest cannot be purchased through registration for Wildcat Welcome Week. All tickets for the event must be picked up in front of the Centennial Hall Box office.

The Eve 6 concert is on Friday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m.
