CCIT is fixing university Internet problems

Engineers are accommodating for the net's "traffic" this

A Center for Computing and Information Technology systems analyst said the UA's Internet-access system went down sporadically yesterday partly because of a hardware problem and too much user traffic.

The system was down for about 12 hours Tuesday when the main router, which connects the university ethernet off campus, broke down.

The faulty hardware was found and fixed yesterday.

There was a bad interface card on a router, which has been replaced, said Ted Frohling, network systems analyst principal.

"We're putting in higher speeds for the routers," he said.

Frohling also said more students using the Internet in the residence halls and the libraries than before contributes to the difficulties.

"We're also getting a lot more computer-savvy students," he said.

Engineers were working on the network at 5 a.m. today to "keep up with the campus traffic," he said.

Barbara Hoffman, associate director of computing at CCIT, said they can't pinpoint an exact cause, though.

"There isn't a simple answer at this point," she said.
