Men's tennis heads to San Diego for tournament

The Arizona men's tennis team will compete today through Sunday at the USD All-College Invitational in San Diego, California.

The Wildcats are one of eight teams to send players to the competition.

The tournament - which will be held at USD's campus in Alcala Park in San Diego - marks the first event of the year in which all nine Arizona players will compete together.

Each of UA's nine players will play in the singles draw, while eight Wildcats will compete in doubles action.

UA junior Steven Capriati is seeded second in the singles draw, while freshman Carl Hagman is seeded seventh.

In the doubles draw, the team of Capriati and freshman Whi Kim are seeded third and the team of Hagman and sophomore Tom Lloyd are ranked fourth.

Lloyd and junior Bruno Aropovic are the only two Arizona players to compete in a college tournament this season.

Both failed to qualify at the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships in Baltimore, Md., last month.

The tournament, however, will not affect the Wildcats' team standings. Arizona's first head-to-head meet will take place Jan. 20 against New Mexico State.

Pacific 10 Conference play will begin a week later - Jan. 26 - against UCLA.
