Golf team tries to get back on track

After struggling at the Golf World Invitational, both the Arizona men's and women's golf teams will try to regain their winning ways today at the CGF National Intercollegiate Match Play Team Championships.

After a disappointing sixth place finish last weekend, the No. 1 women's team will compete in its final fall tournament of the season.

The Wildcats will face a familiar face in the opening round today at the West Bay Club in Estero, Fla. - Georgia head coach Todd McCorkle.

McCorkle coached UA to the 2000 NCAA Women's Golf National Championship last season but left the school for Georgia in order to return to the South.

Arizona is the No. 1 seed in the eight-seed tournament and will be led by freshman Lorena Ochoa - the No. 1 ranked collegiate golfer.

Ochoa won the Golf World Invitational in a one hole playoff last weekend, her second individual title of the season.

Along with Ochoa, freshman Natalie Gulbis, sophomores Laura Myerscough and Anne Lee; and junior Cristina Baena will all play for the Wildcats.

Gulbis is the No. 3 ranked golfer in the country and finished in a tie for 16th place with a four-over-par 220 last weekend.

Also competing in the tournament are No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Southern California, No. 6 Auburn, No. 8 Pepperdine, No. 9 Texas, No. 13 Louisiana State and No. 17 Georgia.

Like the women's team, the UA men's team is also seeking to regain its form after struggling last weekend at the Golf World Invitational.

The No. 6 Wildcats had their worst finish of the season, as the team ended the three-day tournament in 12th place.

Arizona - No. 3 seed - will field a lineup of freshman Chris Nallen, sophomores Ricky Barnes and Reid Hatley; and junior Cody Beyer.

Beyer paced UA last weekend, finishing in sixth-place, his highest placing of the year.

The Wildcats will face No. 6 seed Northwestern in the opening round of the tournament.

Georgia is the No. 1 seed, followed by Clemson, UA, Texas, Georgia Tech, Northwestern, UNLV and Houston.

UA will be led by Barnes, the 2000 National Freshman of the Year, who is the only ranked Arizona player at No. 23.
