Wildcat men face tough meet

The Arizona men's swimming will face a deep field this weekend in what could become a measuring-stick meet for the Wildcats.

The UA men are competing in the Texas Invitational, held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

The meet- which starts today and will run through Sunday -will give the swimming and diving teams a very good idea of where they stack up nationally.

While it is still relatively early in the season, this competition should feature many of the teams that will compete in late March for the NCAA championships.

Invited teams on the men's side include: No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Arizona, No. 5 California, No. 9 Michigan, No. 11 Arizona State, No. 15 Southern Methodist, No. 20 Wisconsin, No. 23 Harvard, No. 25 Nebraska, Kansas and Texas Christian.

Today's and Saturday's preliminaries are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. with finals set for 6:00 p.m.

Sunday's preliminaries will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the finals to follow at 3:00 p.m.

Each of the sessions will last approximately two hours due to the amount of teams that will be participating in the events.

The preliminaries for the men and women will be held in separate pools, while the finals will take place in the same pool.

By the time the meet has finished, Arizona should have a very good idea of how its talent stacks up to the very best that the rest of the country has to offer.

For the men, this will mean proving that there No. 4 ranking is not a carryover from the success of last year's team.
