UA tennis falls at Pac-10 Indoor Championships

Consistency was not in Arizona's cards this past weekend at the Pacific 10 Conference's annual indoor championship in Seattle, Wash.

Junior Sophie Regnier and freshmen Perrine Pernin and Debbie Larocque were the only Wildcats to move past the first round in any flight.

"The team got off to a rough start," UA assistant coach Simon Thibodeau said. "Many players were not ready to play in this tough of a tournament after the break."

The No. 24 Wildcats were up against eight other teams, five of whom were ranked in the NCAA's top 25 poll.

Pernin said that the Wildcats - although rusty from Winter break - were relaxed following the month-long hiatus.

"We needed the break," Pernin said. "We were able to think of something else."

Larocque moved onto the quarterfinals Friday after defeating Stanford's Lauren Barnikow, 2-1. In the semifinals, however, the freshman lost to Oregon's Janice Nyland, 2-0.

Pernin defeated Catherine Lynch of California in two straight sets and went on to play Southern California's Melissa Esmero. She couldn't find the edge over Esmero, who defeated the UA freshman in the third set.

Pernin, along with Regnier, played their way into the semifinals where they were outlasted by Cal's Sekita Grant and Raquel Kops-Jones.

Their push into the semifinals was good enough for a fourth place finish in the Flight II doubles bracket of the tournament.

Regnier advanced to the finals of the Flight II Singles Consolation round Sunday. She fell to Stanford's Lauren Barnikow in the first two sets.
