Local bars on the offensive against fake IDs
Improving technology, easier access make detecting false IDs more difficult
In boxes and bags tucked away in a local bar, a graveyard grows each night.
A collection of fake IDs, stored at Dirtbag's, encompasses almost two decades of students trying to add just a few years to their age.
Gary Welch, owner of Dirtbag's, 1800 E. Speedway Blvd., and caretaker of this stack of thousands of IDs taken away from underaged people since 1982, said he expects the collection will do most of its growing within the next few weeks.
As University of Arizona students come back to school for a new semester, many of them bring along identification cards, which they are anxious to test at local bars. Unfortunately for them, Dirtbag's has been claiming up to five a night, said Adam Thrall, head bouncer of the bar.
Thrall said his staff undergoes a training program to learn how to detect these IDs, which "are usually pretty obvious."

UA proposes to spend Prop. 301 funds on optics, biotechnology and hydraulics
Likins urges investment or universities will be left behind
TEMPE - UA President Peter Likins urged the Arizona Board of Regents yesterday to invest in research, biotechnology and information technology with Proposition 301 funds in order for the UA to be a strong presence in the new economy.
"With these funds we have the possibility to attract powerful players but we have to demonstrate that we are interested," Likins said at yesterday's meeting at Arizona State University.

UA offense shut down by BYU
Wildcats lose home opener, BYU pitcher baffles hitters
The UA bats were as cold as the temperature at Sancet Field yesterday.
The Wildcat baseball team struggled to score runs in their home opener, eventually losing to Brigham Young, 8-4. Arizona (3-2) were only able to muster three hits through the first eight innings as Cougar starter Nate Fernley (1-0) struck out 11 batters.

Mackavic deserves six figures, but so do profs
John Mackovic, the new UA football coach, has a big name and an even bigger prospective salary.
Today, the Arizona Board of Regents will decide whether to approve his $800,000 salary offer.
Mackovic should earn the proposed amount. However, the efforts of 1,352 UA professors who earn an average $69,870 - less than 10 percent of Mackovic's proposed salary - should be financially recognized as well.
The UA should attract the best in sports, administration and academics. Unfortunately, university priorities usually rank in that order.

The art of movement
UA Museum of Art exhibit comes to life with dance show Considered to be art in animation,
"Heritage of Earth," a dance show inspired by the work of artist Robert Stackhouse, will bring a little bit of Minoan culture to the UA Sunday.
The show was choreographed by John Wilson, a professor of dance for 25 years at the University of Arizona.
The piece has been in progress for about a year and a half, and the dancers have been preparing for the show since early Fall.
