Mackovic could bring in money, football victories
Regarding Friday's article about John Mackovic: remember that this coach could help the university gain millions of dollars in advertising if he is successful (and we have no reason to believe he won't be), not to mention alumni support is usually greater when the sports programs are doing well. In a perfect world you are right, teachers are underpaid, but don't underestimate the value a successful coach can bring to the school. Remember that the UA has to be competitive in terms of coaching salaries, or we will always have mediocre teams. Do you think Lute would stick around for 70k a year? We need to remain competitive.

Newspapers 'haunt, taunt' both parties
I am awfully tired of Democrats and Republicans alike complaining about the newspapers. Democrats try to convey the newspapers as Republican, and vice versa. The truth is there are just as many republican-biased papers as there are democrat. Neither one is a majority. The press will haunt, taunt, make or break anyone in public view whether it is President Bush or Al Gore. Those of you who wish to blame the newspapers for bipartisanship and swing should really consider what the press is. The press doesn't report the news. They report appeals. If it is sexy, it sells.
And the whole post-election recount affair? Well you must realize that the entire country faces "irregularities" in their voting systems. Florida is not a lone duck. And people are disenfranchised everywhere, not just minorities. Many college students, unfamiliar with the whole registration process, become the victims of disenfranchisement. The press plays the minority disenfranchisement card because they are ruthless and they know that it will appeal to that particular voting group. Finally, no matter who you are, what state you live in, what voting district you are from, or how you voted, President Bush is your president. You do not have to enjoy that, but you must live with it. Give it a rest, no matter how many times you count the votes now, George W. Bush will still be the president.
