Senate passes funding for Club Olympics, shuttle service

Two ASUA senators' long-term goals received funding at last night's senate meeting.

Associated Students of the University of Arizona Sen. Jennifer Reece has worked throughout the semester to form a Club Olympics on the Mall and at Spring Fling.

Funding for the event was approved last night in the amount of $1,360.08.

The money approved would fund up to 20 clubs. Any clubs after that would have to pay a $20 fee for various expenses.

"It's just a great way for clubs to get together," Reece told the other senators.

Most of the costs are for tables, chairs and a sound system.

The games, scheduled for April 8-10 in correlation with Spring Fling, will pit various UA clubs against each other in events including wheelbarrow races, pie-eating contests, an egg toss and a talent show.

Also last night, Sen. Sarah Calvert's request for $1,050 to fund a shuttle to and from area supermarkets for students in the dorms was approved.

Calvert proposed the idea when she ran for senate last year.

The shuttle will begin running on March 3 and will continue every Sunday after that until April 28, not including spring break.

Calvert said the shuttle will run to Safeway on East Broadway Boulevard and back for four hours at a time, although the times have yet to be determined.

The pickup locations will be Arizona-Sonora, Manzanita-Mojave and La Paz residence halls.

The senate also struck funding for Alternative Spring Break for the second time this semester.

Some senators argued during a Feb. 7 meeting that funding the club would violate the state constitution, which does not allow for the funding of philanthropic activities.

The proposal will go back to the Appropriations Board, where board members will reconsider it after hearing suggestions from ASUA's lawyer.
