The No. 12 Arizona gymnastics team lost to No. 15 Arizona State on Friday night in Tempe (197.850-196.700), despite posting the second-highest team score in school history.

Arizona's record fell to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference, even after setting a new school record on the vault with a score of 49.475. However, the record was just good enough for a tie with ASU (6-5-1, 2-3-1 Pac-10) in the event. The Gymcats also won the team beam title (48.950), but were unable to push past the Sun Devils on the bars or the floor exercise.

UA senior Randi Liljenquist had a spectacular night individually, posting the best meet of her career and arguably the best individual performance in the history of the Arizona program.

Liljenquist, a Tucson native who prepped at Canyon Del Oro High School, broke two school records en route to setting three career highs against ASU. She finished tied for first on the vault with a career-high 9.950, first in the all-around competition, setting a new school record with a mark of 39.775, and tied for first on the beam, breaking another school record by scoring a perfect 10.000 score in the event.

"I couldn't have asked for a better present," said Liljenquist, who celebrated her 23rd birthday Thursday. "The 10 on the beam topped off a great night, and I'll never forget it."

UA freshman Monica Bisordi finished second in the all-around competition (39.075) to Liljenquist, while also tying for fifth on the bars. Bisordi set a career high with a score of 9.925 on the beam, good for fourth in the event.

Arizona sophomore Katie Johnson tied for fourth on the floor (9.900), while finishing with a career high 9.900 score on the beam.

"We had a few hiccups, but I have to be pleased with this, our highest score of the year," head coach Bill Ryden said. "When an important piece (of the team) works at its best like Randi did, the rest of the unit will work at its best as well."

The Gymcats will spend part of their spring break in Norman, Okla., when they take on No. 7 Oklahoma on Sunday.
