The University Activities Board "Eye on Diversity" committee will sponsor intercultural blind dates for two couples. The dates will be videotaped and later presented during the organization's International Dating Forum.
UAB hopes to open dialogue about interracial dating, help people assess their own comfort level and challenge social norms with the dates.
Each date participant will be matched with a student outside his or her own ethnicity or culture.
The Interculteral Dating Forum will be Wednesday in Modern Languages 350 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call Travis Lane at 621-0760.
'Amelie' wins Best Picture in France
Associated Press
France's whimsical romance "Amelie" won best picture at the Cesar awards, the French equivalent of the Oscars.
The creative comedy also won for best director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet. But its much-praised star, Audrey Tautou, was passed over for best actress in favor of Emmanuelle Devos in "Sur Mes Levres (Read My Lips)."
"Amelie" won two other awards at the ceremony Saturday evening - for music and art direction. It had received a record 13 nominations.
Already the top-grossing French film ever in the United States, "Amelie" is a leading candidate for best foreign film at the Oscars March 24.
The film, which has broken box-office records in France, stars Tautou as a shy and quirky young woman who goes about improving the lives of those around her in imaginative ways - but lacks the courage to pursue the object of her affections.
