'Safe Ride' now official name of campus transportation service
The Associated Students senate voted unanimously last night to appoint Craig Haubrich as the new director of ASUA Safe Ride, formerly the Escort Service.
The service began transporting students around campus Tuesday night under Haubrich's leadership, but it was not until yesterday that the new director was officially approved by the Associated Students of the University of Arizona senate.
In addition to Haubrich's appointment, the senate voted to change the name of the Escort Service to ASUA Safe Ride, a move Tricia Williams, ASUA administrative vice president, said was a long time coming.
"It's something we've been thinking about for some time," Williams said. "The name just sounds more appropriate."
Williams said the name change takes place immediately, but it will take time to get the word out there, which will include having new shirts made for the organization's employees.
Williams pointed out that the number for the old Escort Service included the word "safe," and said the new name is more representative of what the service stands for.
She jokingly added how her mother had responded when Williams told her she was working for the Escort Service.
"'Escort' had a different meaning when the service began," she said.
Williams said ASUA Safe Ride's first night was slow but steady, and the organization will continue looking for students to fill positions.
