Man arrested for dorm harassment

A Tucson man suspected of harassing women in three UA dorms was arrested Saturday night after leading police on a car chase west of campus, a UAPD spokesman said.

University of Arizona Police Department officers arrested Esteban Rodriquez, 24, at his home on the 300 block of West Los Reales Road, for allegedly entering women's rest rooms in UA residence halls and watching women in the shower, UAPD Cmdr. Brian Seastone said.

Rodriguez also allegedly asked several residents if he could have sex with them, Seastone said.

He said that on Saturday at about 3:30 p.m, UAPD received several calls that an older Hispanic male was walking though La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave., and entering the rooms of female residents who had their doors open.

After resident assistants asked Rodriguez to leave, he went to Manzanita-Mohave Residence Hall, 1000 N. Park Ave., where he entered a women's restroom and watched a female student shower.

Seastone said the student screamed after seeing Rodriguez.

Manzanita-Mohave resident Deborah Harris said the student's boyfriend, who was outside the bathroom, heard the scream and punched Rodriguez in the face.

Rodriguez was then forced out of the dorm and ran to his car on East North Campus Drive. Seastone said police noticed him running to his car and attempted to stop him as he sped away.

He said an officer tried to stop Rodriguez at the intersection of North Campus Drive and North Park Avenue by standing in the way of his vehicle.

Rodriguez still sped through the intersection, forcing the officer to dive out of the way.

Seastone said Rodriguez then sped on East Second Street past North Euclid Avenue, where he abandoned his car.

Officers were able to identify Rodriguez by the car's license plate, and were able to track him down at his home.

He was booked into Pima County Jail on charges of sexual assault, burglary, aggravated assault on a police officer and criminal trespassing.

As of yesterday evening, bond had not been set.

Seastone said Rodriguez also restrained one of his victims, which led to him being charged with kidnapping.

Seastone said Rodriguez also fit the description of a man who allegedly went into a women's restroom in Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 940 E. Fifth St., and watched women as they showered Wednesday morning.

Security at the three residence halls was tight after the string of incidents. Notes were posted in door windows alerting residents of the incidents and saying that the doors would be locked until further notice - only allowing people with keys to enter the building.

One Manzanita-Mohave resident said even locking the doors wouldn't faze someone who really wanted to get in because residents regularly open doors for people who they think belong there.

"You just get so used to the comfort of letting someone in. You see someone and think it's their boyfriend or friend," said Harris, a junior majoring in English.

Another Manzanita-Mohave resident saw Saturday's incident as a lesson.

"It's kind of a reality check," said Rachel Weinress, business freshman. "We didn't even lock our doors before, but now we do.
