The No. 1 Arizona softball team dropped consecutive games for the first time in more than two years as No. 8 California swept a two-game weekend series that also saw Jennie Finch lose just her fourth game in the last three years.
Arizona lost 2-1 yesterday, when Cal senior Jocelyn Forest threw a 15-strikeout one-hitter in the Bear victory to round out the program's first-ever sweep of the Arizona schools.
After Finch tied the contest with a solo home run in the fourth inning, Cal's Candace Harper answered with a solo shot off of sophomore Jenny Gladding (16-5) in the fifth for the eventual game-winner.
Finch, who is now 85-4 over the last three years, allowed five earned runs to No. 8 California on Saturday as the Golden Bears (42-14 overall, 8-4 Pacific 10) handed the Wildcats a 5-2 setback.
Freshman third baseman Jackie Coburn provided all of UA's offense with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, but it would not be enough as the Wildcats lost for just the second time in their last sixteen games.
Arizona (41-7, 8-3) began the weekend by knocking off No. 3 Stanford (35-11, 4-8) in dramatic fashion, 2-1 on Friday. Trailing by a run heading into the top of the seventh inning, sophomore catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest belted a two-run homer to put UA ahead for good.
Finch earned her 24th victory of the year, allowing just three hits while striking out five.
Arizona will resume Pac-10 play this weekend when the Oregon schools arrive in Tucson for a three-game set beginning Friday.
