New ASUA officers open term by lauding low tuition hike

Student government also officially announces new emergency shuttle program

The newest ASUA officers opened their terms May 1 by passing a resolution supporting the recently approved 4 percent tuition hike and announcing the arrival of a 24-hour taxi program.

New President Doug Hartz thanked the senate and other Associated Students of the University of Arizona officials for their support of the low increase.

ãItâs going to be tough next year, because we, like everyone else, are expecting a 7 to 10 percent budget recession next year,ä said Hartz said. ãHopefully we can save extra money within our budget to offset any additional costs that might come up.ä

The meeting also confirmed the arrival of Lifeline, a 24-hour taxi program that will provide students with transportation in emergency situations.

Senator Adam Bronnenkant, who is taking over the program from former senator Josh Maxwell, said he hopes the program will be a success, although he is still working on how to distribute cards with the necessary telephone numbers to students.

ãIf all goes the way I like, I am hoping we can distribute them through the departments, faculty and residence halls,ä Bronnenkant said. ãBut I still have some brainstorming to do about the project.ä

Hartz also discussed plans to increase ASUAâs interaction with the UA student body, by interacting with other clubs and increasing relations with alumni, starting with events like CatFest, an annual concert headlined by a popular band.

ãWe have already started working with the University Activities Board, and we plan on opening CatFest up to all clubs, who want to take the opportunity to get out there and look for new members,ä Hartz said.

Other activities like Club Olympics will continue next year as well, with new Executive Vice President Jennifer Reece hoping to turn the weeklong event into one day, and add other events similar to it.

ãJennifer has lots of ideas of events for next year, but itâs really early to say just what those are going to be,ä Hartz said. ãWeâre looking forward to a great year.ä
