UA football players arrested Sunday morning
Three UA football players were arrested early in the morning Sunday on charges of fighting in front of a local bar.
Sophomore strong safety Danny Perry, junior defensive end Andre Torrey and junior tight end Javier Martinez were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly fighting with other bar patrons in front of Cheās Lounge, 346 N. Fourth Ave.
"There are two sides to every story and I expressed to them the need to get to the bottom of this as soon as possible. Then weāll talk about any action that we see is appropriate," said Head Football Coach John Mackovic.
Perry is a walk-on from Tucson who missed the 2001 season with a knee injury. Martinez and Torrey have yet to play on down after transferring from junior colleges. During spring football Martinez expressed interest in moving to defense and Torrey was a highly touted recruit who earned all-conference accolades at Laney College in Oakland, Calif.
There were no other arrests in the altercation.
Football luncheon scheduled for Aug. 21
Mackovic will be joined by assistant coaches and senior football players Aug. 21 to discuss the upcoming season at the annual football Kick-off Luncheon.
The luncheon, located at the DoubleTree at Reid Park Hotel, is slated to start at noon. Admission is $25 for the general public.
For reservations or information call 792-2250, ext. 135.
The Wildcats will open the season Aug. 31, against Northern Arizona University at home.
