A man who was fouled, blew a kiss to the person who fouled him and was then punched in the nose, left eye and possibly the mouth during a five on five basketball game at the Student Recreation Center on Wednesday, reports stated.
An employee at the Rec Center, 1400 E. Sixth St., called University of Arizona Police Department officers after witnessing an assault on the basketball court.
One witness said the man a made a basket and then got in close to another manâs face, blew him a kiss and raised both of his middle fingers at the man for two to three seconds, reports stated.
The witness told the UAPD officer that he construed the raised middle fingers and imitation kiss to mean that the man had made the basket.
The man who made the freethrow said he had thrown a kiss, which meant that he had made the basket. He said that he raised his middle index fingers, maybe on both hands at the same time, to indicate that he had made a basket.
Then the man hit the freethrow shooter, who was raising his middle fingers toward him, reports stated.
The suspect, victim and two witnesses were not employed by or students at UA.
The man was from East Africa, and was unaware that the gesture could be construed as offensive, reports stated.
The freethrow shooter said he wanted to prosecute the man who hit him.
Two people were cited Wednesday for drinking in public at a bus stop at East Speedway Boulevard and North Park Avenue, reports stated.
UAPD officers stopped at a bus stop, where they saw a man and a woman drinking from what appeared to be a can of beer.
There was a strong odor of alcohol on the man, woman and a third man, who officers did not observe drinking, reports stated.
The can of beer was three fourths full and cold to the touch.
The man officers had observed drinking from the can had red watery eyes, difficulty understanding and answering questions and slurred speech, reports stated.
The woman also had red, watery eyes, appeared extremely intoxicated and had speech that was difficult to understand, reports stated.
She said she had been drinking.
"Weâre just sitting here drinking," the man said. "Weâre not hurting anybody."
Both the man and the woman who police had observed drinking from the beer can were arrested and released on the scene, reports stated.
The third man did not say he drank and was not cited until the next morning, when a UAPD officer on top of the parking garage at North Park Avenue and East Speedway Boulevard observed him drinking at the same bus stop. He was arrested and released at the scene.
A student reported $2,140 worth of cutlery, CDs and DVD movies stolen Wednesday, reports stated.
The student said that his bedroom at 1420 N. Vine Ave. had been broken into between July 16 and July 30, and that $2,140 worth of knives, CDs and DVDs had been stolen.
The student stated that the lock to his room had been changed during his absence and his key no longer worked. He had gone in through the bedroom window, which was still intact, to gain access to his room, reports stated.
The student stated that there were numerous construction workers in his building during his absence, as the fraternity house where the student lives was being remodeled.
There were no suspects or witnesses, but the student named a possible investigative lead, reports stated.
Officers could not detect any signs of forced entry into the room.
A bicycle locked with a u-lock through the frame and front tire was stolen from the Meinel Optical Sciences building sometime between July 25 and Wednesday, reports stated.
A student reported that she had locked up her pink and white late 70s Schwinn model bike, at the Meinel Optical Sciences building on July 25.
The student said she secured both the frame and the front tire with the lock.
When the student returned to the building at 130 E. University Blvd. on Wednesday, her bicycle was missing, reports stated.
The bicycle was registered with Parking and Transportation Services, but the student said she did not have any serial numbers for the bicycle.
