On this date: Monday September 17th, 2001 In 1787, in Philadelphia, the Constitution of the United States of America was signed by delegates from 12 states at the Constitutional Convention. The United States Constitution is the world's oldest working constitution. In 1796, President George Washington delivered his farewell address to the American people. He had been president since 1789. In 1911, the first transcontinental airplane flight, departing from New York City and landing in Pasadena, Calif., was successfully finished. It took C.P. Rogers 82 hours to fly across the United States. In 1984, the largest group of immigrants, 9,706 people, to become naturalized citizens of the United States was sworn in by Vice President George Bush in Miami, Fla. In 1997, Northern Ireland's main Protestant party joined in peace talks. It was the first time that all of the major players had come together.
