Midterms begin soon, so I thought it would be a good time to quiz the Arizona faithful on a variety of sports questions.

Some of you - more likely all of you - will pass this off as stupid trivia thought up by a particularly brain-drained columnist who couldn't figure out what to write this week. And you know what? You're right. But I'm older than most of you out there (even the alumni), and I don't need to prove the validity of my sports mid-term to you or anyone else.

However, if incentive is what you need, here's the scoop - I will treat the first three people who e-mail me (cdmartin@u.arizona.edu) the correct answers to all five questions to a free sandwich or sub at the Sausage Deli. You can buy your own Pepsi, beer or lemonade, because at $19 a column I don't get paid nearly enough to buy the extras.

So· here we go!

Question 1: Where on God's green earth is O.J.?

No, we are not talking about our favorite white-Bronco-driving Orenthal James Simpson, who, by the way, was last seen in Miami with some tramp - oops, I mean exotic dancer.

I'm talking about Ortege Jenkins.

The former Wildcat quarterback who looked like Michael Vick as a freshman, dazzled us all with the "Leap by the Lake" as a sophomore, struggled as a junior and looked like Rick Ankiel on a bender during his senior season still receives money for flipping the pigskin.

I was always told that you are supposed to get better with more experience, but it surely wasn't the case with this guy.

O.J. is still chucking ducks somewhere, and it is your job to find out what quarterback-deprived team actually gave this guy a paycheck.

Question 2: Who was the first opponent the UA women's soccer team ever defeated?

This should be an easy one, because in the program's eight years of existence, wins have been few and far between.

Amazingly, it took only three games for the Wildcats to win their first game. Unfortunately, the program has spiraled downwards since then, compiling a horrid 34-83-8 record.

I might poke a little fun at the soccer team now and then, but this happens to be my favorite squad at Arizona.

No team plays harder than coach Cathy Klein's, and no team has a brighter future here at UA. The team has already proven it is competitive this season, a far cry from a few years back. I guarantee this team will win a Pac-10 championship within three years.

This question truly annoys my editors because they think soccer is still a Communist sport, which makes me laugh.

The Cold War is over, boys and girls, so you might as well become a fan and recognize the world's most popular sport.

Question 3: Who are the only brothers to win individual NCAA championships in the same event for the UA swim team?

This is quite a remarkable feat for the parents of these two.

Just think of the swimming genes running in that family tree.

Could you imagine what would happen if Ian Thorpe or Mark Spitz had that luck?

They could breed the greatest swimmers ever to set foot in a pool. Even more remarkable is that they wouldn't even need EPO to become the best in the world.

Question 4: Name the four former Cats to have their numbers retired by the UA baseball team?

This is a program with a rich history, if you don't include the last five or so years. There are many athletes who could make a claim to have their numbers retired - Trevor Hoffman, Scott Erickson and Shelley Duncan - yet only four share the honor.

All four are, and were, deserving of the bestowment, and now it is your job to find out who they are.

Question 5: What is the first name of the editor in chief of the Wildcat?

This is a tricky one so watch out.

Best of luck. Deadline for all answers is noon on Monday.
