Eric Chang, a management information systems and computer sciences senior, makes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the Mall yesterday afternoon. Making sandwiches for the homeless is just one of the Fall Service project events taking place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. this week on the Mall.

Students can spend a few minutes a day volunteering
The UA community can take part in simple volunteer projects through a weeklong event aimed at promoting community service.
Fall Service Week aims to inform the University of Arizona community about how easy it is to volunteer for community service, said Bron D'Angelo, executive vice president of the University Activities Board.
Project Volunteer, a subcommittee of UAB, organized the event and is inviting the university community to visit its booth on the UA Mall to work on different community service projects throughout the week.
Rachel Burke, director of Project Volunteer, said students can do some quick and easy community service between their classes. She said each day's project should not take more than a few minutes to complete.
Yesterday's project consisted of making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the Casa Maria homeless shelter.
Fall Service Projects for this week:
Today: Safety awareness and neighborhood watch
Wednesday: Writing letters of support to troops overseas
Thursday: Decorating flower pots for the elderly
Friday: Making Halloween decorations for a youth center haunted house

"It doesn't take much, you just have to give a little time," she said. "The sandwiches took less than a minute to make."
The committee accomplished its goal by making 100 sandwiches.
Burke said that each day the committee will work on a different community service project and provide all the supplies needed for the project.
"The university community need only come by and do the day's service and we will take care of the rest," she said. "It's a way they can give back and make a difference."
Along with the community service projects, UAB is registering students for its All-Campus Philanthropy day.
Burke said that on Nov. 3, the organization will transport students from campus to various community service projects throughout Tucson.
Students can volunteer for four types of community service: hunger and poverty outreach, neighborhood beautification, youth programs and elderly services.
"We hope to get people to think about their community and what they can do to help," Burke said.
D'Angelo said the philanthropy day is an opportunity for people to see what kind of volunteering they want to participate in.
"All year long, the committee is looking for ways to get people to volunteer and build strong ties with the community," he said. "We're trying to get the word out to the university that they can easily volunteer to help."
Fall Service Week will continue on the UA Mall today through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
