Arizona lags in earning degrees

Lack of jobs for graduates may be related to scarcely educated population

Arizona lags nationally when it comes to the number of residents with college degrees, and that may play a role in the vitality of the state's economy, education officials say.

According to census figures released last week, an estimated 22.5 percent of Arizonans age 25 and older hold bachelor's degrees or higher. That places the state 37th in the nation. The national average is 25.1 percent.

The census report also said Arizona students are graduating from high school at the same rate as the rest of the nation.

Kay McKay, president of the Arizona Board of Regents, said a great deal of work is being done to create a "pipeline" for high school graduates to enter into college.

Anger toward parking employee misdirected

Amanda Johnson obviously doesn't know what she is talking about. I am a student and a Parking and Transportation employee here, and she is obviously ignorant of the contract she signed and the policies here. When Amanda received her permit, she agreed not to use it on game days. This policy is not Parking's fault, it is the Athletic Department's policy that we have to follow. If she is going to be shooting her mouth off, she should know who she is aiming it at.

Santa Clarita band finds 'filthy inspiration'

B9's approach to music is a little different than other pop-punk bands of the moment. They don't want to give any "fat lips" (Sum 41) or even encourage people to "stay together for the kids" (Blink 182). No, B9 wants to give its audience inspired songs about dirty laundry.
