Wade named Pac-10 offensive Player of the Week
It took the entire season, but a UA football player was finally named a Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Week.
Arizona junior wide receiver Bobby Wade, who played a key role in the Wildcats' 34-21 victory at Arizona State, was named the offensive player of the week.
Wade, playing in front of his home crowd, pulled in a career-high 11 receptions for 157 yards (14.3 yards per catch), including a 19-yard touchdown reception.
California defensive end Tully Banta-Cain was named the conference's defensive player the week.
Wade finished the season as the Wildcats' leader in receptions (62), yards (882) and receiving touchdowns (8).
UA soccer player honored for brains, not brawn
Add another name to the long list of UA players to make the Academic All-Pacific 10 Conference team.
UA senior goalie Shannon Monti has been named to the Pac-10's All-Academic second team, the league office announced yesterday.
Monti holds a 3.31 grade point average in studio arts.
The Phoenix native finished in second place on the UA career list in minutes played (4024), second in goals-against average (2.50), third in fewest goals allowed (112), third in saves (253), third in shutouts (3) and tied for seventh in games started (47).
She helped the Wildcats to a 5-12-1 record overall and a 2-7-0 Pac-10 mark this season. The squad surpassed the 2000 season win total, and they won the program's most Pac-10 games since 1997.
This season, Monti led the Pac-10 in saves (108) and in saves per game (6.0 spg) while starting all 18 matches in goal for the Wildcats. She had three double-digit saves performances, and her 1,653 minutes played is the second-highest single season minutes total ever played by a UA goalkeeper.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
Wildcats lure 5 recruits
In an attempt to help ease the loss of 11 swimmers to graduation after this season, the UA women's swimming and diving program signed four recruits before the end of the fall signing period Tuesday. The men also added a recruit to the list.
The five recruits were Katie Willis from Kent, Wash., who was the Washington State Champion in both the 200m individual medley and 100m breast; Erin Sieper from Anaheim, Calif., an Olympic trials qualifier in the 100m and 200m breaststroke; 1999 World Cup 50m backstroke medallist Marshi Smith and Lisa Pursley from Colorado Springs, Colo.
Sabino High School's Dave Rollins, the Arizona state champion in the 200m individual medley and a native Tucsonan, is the lone signee for the men's team.
