Students questioned by 'Tonight Show' host via satellite yesterday
UA students got their 15 minutes of fame yesterday when late-night talk show host Jay Leno conducted interviews with them via satellite from his studio in Burbank, Calif.
A crew from Leno's show, "The Tonight Show," was on campus yesterday to help Leno ask questions for the "Jay Walking" segment of his show. The questions ranged from - "Who is the president of the university?" to "What is the address of the White House?"
"Jay Walking" is a segment on "The Tonight Show" that is aimed at asking random strangers a simple question in hopes of getting the wrong answer in return.
Twelve students had the chance to be quizzed by Leno, and although some questions were answered wrong, production manager Tom Patino was concerned with the number of questions they actually got right.
He also wondered if setting up the interview in an area known for performance-oriented students would generate more animated answers.
"Maybe next time, we should do this (taping) in front of the theater arts building," Patino said.
Patino said although this was the crew's first of 50 colleges it planned to visit, he felt the taping went rather well overall.
"The plan is to visit 50 (colleges), and if this goes over OK, we'll do them all," Patino said.
Although it may seem that the selection of students was random, one crew member handpicked students for Leno to grill.
"When we normally do this, we have a line of people already picked out before we start taping," said Scott Atwell, production assistant.
Leno and his production team regularly visit colleges in the Los Angeles area to question students, but because of Leno's strict schedule, he was not able to be here in person.
Leno's team will visit the University of Washington next week. The "Jay Walking" segment filmed at UA will air Jan. 30 on KVOA Channel 4 at 10:35 p.m.
