Ref out of line and saw a different game

To Mike the Referee - Which game were you at?

As a hockey fan, I often joke that the referee happens to be missing a great game. After reading your letter, I have my doubts that you were even at the game - or if you were, you were not paying any attention.

I would like to make a correction on your comments about the Icecats game against Colorado State. First and foremost, you did not, NOT, have the entire 120 section removed; you only had two people removed. The rest of us left on our own because of the way the event staff handled the situation, which I believe Mr. Paul Bentz addressed in his letter on Jan. 15.

The second thing I would like to address is the allegation that the someone who threw a pop on one of the players was in section 120. Being that I was there and the offense would have occurred in my line of sight as I watched the game, one would think that I, or for that matter any other of the fans in section 120, would have seen this. This weekend, during the UA-Michigan State game, we talked about the pop incident. None of the fans in this section could recall this happening. This might have happened, but not in 120. Did the referees bother to investigate to see if there was any proof of this phantom event? Did they skate over to see if there was any pop spilled on the ice or down the glass? No they did not. They instead listened to the gripes of a player, whose team played cheap and dirty, who was frustrated that they were losing.

After reading your letter, it is entirely clear to me that referees not only blow calls on the ice, they screw them up out in the real world as well. With your letter, you have proven yourself to be oblivious and ignorant of events around you. By accusing the entire 120 section of poor behavior and calling the true fans idiots and morons, you have shown yourself to be a small, narrow-minded person incapable of examining a situation and coming to an informed and unbiased decision. With any luck, by next year you will be replaced by a ref who will open his eyes and find out what really happened and not just give a knee-jerk reaction.

Join the protest against 'Sugar Lame'

I, Psycho Dave, would like to announce on behalf of all of KAMP Student Radio a full-blown protest of the Sugar Ray concert. We would like to invite any and all people who love music and loathe this poor excuse for a band, or as I prefer to call them, Aural Diarrhea, to join in the protests.

The exact date of the protest is as of yet undecided, but it will be soon. I understand that there are people out there who like this band, but they are probably the same people who would say, "Ooo, Oasis! That's like such a standing in the aisle of Sam Goody at 2:05 in the afternoon in the fall of 1996 type of thing!" They probably also think that a cappuccino and a cell phone call are part of a healthy diet.

Me and other KAMP DJs care about music; we love music. It is our religion and our law. To us, Anthrax is not just a disease. Anthrax is a kick-ass heavy metal band. We don't look to MTV to find new music. We read the underground magazines, we seek out young, exciting bands in the clubs, and we love every minute of it!

This is a call to arms, my friends! If you are tired of the New Wave of MTV-sponsored Wimpy-Ass Beach Rock, scream it out! Scream it at the top of your lungs! "I AGREE WITH PSYCHO DAVE! WE DON'T WANT SUGAR LAME!"

Maybe Psycho Dave's plea should be granted

Looking for any upside in having Sugar Ray perform at the UA, I have concluded that financial failure on the part of this act may somewhat save the integrity of this school. Fully knowing that everyone has their our own musical styles to which they listen, should we be catering solely to the MTV-sponsored culture that these acts are paid to perpetuate? The school shouldn't be doing that to us.

Obviously, there are alternatives present for anyone wanting to see a rock band on campus; after all, CatKraze is slated to have Better Than Ezra and Bill Bellamy. This event doesn't really seem to be an improvement, especially because of the ticket cost and the fact that no one should want to listen to a MTV VJ - let alone a washed up MTV VJ.

As for me, I'll just keep counting the days to the Jimmy Eat World concert and, in the meanwhile, spin a little Elliott on my record player. At least there is one good show coming to Tucson - of course, not due to any UA organization.
