If you thought the UA campus got a facelift with a new bookstore and fancy new learning center, wait until 10 a.m. today. Then head down to the Student Union Memorial Center and the UofA Bookstore and check out the first of three public art installations. UA Spire No. 1, at 23-feet tall, will sit in a small performance space north of the student union's ballroom. Susan Gamble, the artist commissioned by the UA for the first of installation, will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, contact Gamble or Judith Anderson at Santa Theresa Tile Works at 623-1856, e-mail the company at or visit the UA Web site at http://www.arts.arizona.edu/art.
After expanding your artistic intellect, grab some cultural brain juice from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, Room 209, as the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee presents "Civil Liberties, Terrorism and People of Color" in a discussion/forum format. The presentation is the first in a series of informative culture topics. For more information, contact Kathy Powers at 621-1177 or e-mail her at powersk@u.arizona.edu.
Leadership is arguably one of the most important qualities to possess in the working world. And the UA knows it, so the Center of Student Involvement and Leadership continues to offer leadership development workshops. Today's installment features techniques and methods for "Reframing Disability." The workshop starts at noon in the Turquoise Room of the Park Student Union. Students who complete seven or more such workshops are eligible for a certificate of Leadership Enrichment. If a student attends 20 or more workshops in a year, he or she becomes a Certified University of Arizona Student Leader. For more information, contact Matt Helm at 626-4905 or e-mail him at helm@u.arizona.edu.
Terrorists and other bad guys use bombs and planes to commit horrific acts of violence. Well, what happens when these people motivated by evil get their hands on weapons of mass destruction? The Public Health Grand Rounds lecture today from noon to 1 p.m. in the Arizona Health Sciences Center, Room 8403, will focus on just that. Richard Carmona of the UA College of Public Health will present "Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction," which is also sponsored by the UA colleges of Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. For more information, contact Kiki Riley at 626-3200, ext. 106.
Summer vacation can be more than sitting on the beach or cutting lawns for beer cash. This year, think about a trip to Ecuador. The Center For Latin American Studies Brownbag Lunch talk features "The Amazon and the Andes" from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. today in the Douglass building, Room 102. Grab some fries and a Mountain Dew and head down to learn about the ASU Ecuador Summer Program and how you can join.
