UA files legal brief on behalf of University of Michigan

At the request of the University of Michigan, UA has joined other universities in filing a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court that supports the University of Michigan's affirmative action admissions policies.

The brief that the UA signed with Wayne State University, Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh questioned whether universities that grant acceptance to graduates in the top percentage of their class assures diversity. [Read article]

Lobbyists urge students to voice opposition to cuts

Nick Green is fed up. He's watched the Arizona Legislature cut tens of millions of dollars from the UA's budget in less than two years. And now, with key legislators calling for state universities to cut a combined $37 million more while significantly raising tuition, he's asking them to stop.

"Show me the money," he's saying. "And don't take it back."

Green and his fellow UA student lobbyists are joining in a statewide campaign asking legislators to stop cutting university budgets and recognize the need for higher education. [Read article]

Architecture students look for ways to make campus more handicapped-accessible

After two and a half hours of running into signposts, struggling up steep ramps and trying to open doors without using their hands, architecture students have a much better appreciation for what it means to be disabled.

The 53 students in architecture 227, architectural programming, went around campus yesterday with blindfolds, earmuffs, crutches, walkers and wheelchairs in an attempt to simulate physical disabilities. [Read article]

Women's studies named outstanding department

The department of women's studies in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences has won the award for University-wide Meritorious Departmental Achievement in Undergraduate Instruction.

The award recognizes and rewards departments that have made unique and significant contributions to the education of students. Only one university department receives this award each year. [Read article]
