Saying you are gong to do better next time and actually doing it are two different things.
Junior pitcher Joe Little made good on his promise to improve yesterday as the Wildcats used a four run fourth inning and strong pitching performances to beat Oklahoma State, 7-4, in a single-game match-up at Sancet Field.
This was Arizona's third consecutive win and sixth win in its last seven games.
Little came on in relief for the first time since his freshman year, and finished the game throwing five innings. He gave up just one run on six hits, this all after having his worst outing of the season just three days earlier.
Little pitched Friday against Minnesota and lasted only 2/3 of an inning and gave up seven runs on eight hits.
This time out was a different story.
"It was more of a mental aspect," said Little. "I went after it a little more aggressively this time out."
Little was able to pitch out of several tough spots to earn his third win of the season.
The Cowboys opened up the fifth inning with runners on second and third, however, Little managed to hold OSU scoreless for the inning after he made a spectacular back-handed stab on a comebacker to hold the runner at third, and he got a ground out double play to close out the inning. Arizona kept its 6-3 lead.
"I pride myself on being able to get out of innings with runners on base," said Little. "Getting out of those innings with runners on base and less than two outs is a big boost to my confidence."
A light rain and the early start on a Monday afternoon kept the crowd numbers down to 247 at Sancet Field. It couldn't keep the Arizona offense down, however.
"Right now our hitters are swinging the bat very well, and we are working through some pitching (troubles)," said head coach Andy Lopez.
Freshman infielder Brad Boyer led the team with two hits, one RBI and scored a run, but for the most part this win was a complete team effort.
Eight out of the nine Wildcat starters collected hits, and the team got RBIs from six different players.
The Wildcats big inning came in the four when freshman catcher Nick Hundley led off the inning with a triple and scored on a throwing error by the Cowboy's centerfielder Jose Virgil.
Sophomore first baseman Pat Reilly extended his hit streak to 18 consecutive games with a single, and was batted in by sophomore infielder John Hardy.
Both junior infielder Moises Duran and sophomore outfielder Jeff Van Houten added RBIs of their own to put the Wildcats up for good.
The Cowboys held a brief one run lead in the top of the fourth after two errors by junior outfielder Dallas Haught allowed two OSU runs to score.
After the Cowboys grabbed the 3-2 lead, Little came in for starter freshman John Meloan and stranded OSU with the bases loaded.
Meloan finished his first career start with 3 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and two earned runs.
"It has been a good weekend. We had one win slip away from us, but I was happy to see us continue and win three games out of four," said Lopez.
