Yesterday afternoon, UA freshman center Shawntinice Polk was named Pacific 10 Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Later in the day, Wildcat sophomore guard Salim Stoudamire pulled the trick on the men's side, being named Pac-10 Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his efforts.
Stoudamire led Arizona to a Bay Area road sweep for the fourth consecutive season after averaging a team-best 19.0 points during UA wins over California and Stanford. Stoudamire connected on 14-of-24 (.583) field goal attempts in the two games while dropping 7-of-12 from 3-point range.
Polk averaged 22.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocks to go along with 1.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game while leading Arizona to its first home sweep of Stanford and Cal in four years as well. Polk shot 69.2 percent (18-of-26).
On the season, Stoudamire is averaging 13.3 points, 1.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 23 games. He is shooting 48.8 percentfrom the field, including 46.7 percent from 3-point range. It is the first time Stoudamire has been so honored by the league office and the 59th all-time for Arizona. It is also the fourth time this season a UA player has earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors. Against Stanford on Thursday, Polk logged her 19th double-double of the season with 23 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead Arizona to its first win over No. 9 Stanford since 2001, 79-64.
Polk broke three school records against Cal on Saturday, while leading Arizona to its 13th straight home win. Her nine blocks broke the previous record of six set during the 1980-81 season. She also set a freshman season scoring record with 482 points while breaking the single-season team record rebounds with 291.
