Dove-Ianello lands job with Wisconsin
What has been expected ever since her husband was hired as the tight end coach for the Wisconsin football squad became a reality Sunday night when former women's basketball associate head coach Denise Dove-Ianello was named to the Wisconsin women's basketball coaching staff.
The new Wisconsin head women's basketball coach Lisa Stone announced her new staff over the weekend at the team's annual awards banquet and Dove-Ianello was named the team's recruiting coordinator.
"I am excited about my staff," said Stone in a press release. "I have surrounded myself with great people."
This move officially ends the 11-year Arizona career for Dove-Ianello. She is seen as one of the top assistant coaches in the nation after being named to the Women's Basketball Journal's top-10 assistant coaches the last two years, including a number 5 ranking in 2002.
Over the last 11 seasons, Dove-Ianello has been instrumental in raising the Wildcats to national prominence, including a 22-9 season and a trip to the NCAA tournament this year.
She has been the recruiting coordinator at Arizona since the 1994-95 season and her recruiting ability is one of the main reasons for the hire at Wisconsin.
"(Dove-)Ianello will be in charge of recruiting," said Stone. "We're excited about our opportunities to spread our recruiting base."
Dove-Ianello said she is also excited about the new opportunity.
"I'm just looking forward to a whole new experience, not only at Wisconsin but Big 10 basketball," Ianello said. "I'm looking forward to helping the program and build on the success that's already been formed here."
Tennis swept in Bay Area
UA men's tennis dropped both its matches this weekend in California to Pac-10 powerhouses Stanford and California.
Arizona, up 19 spots in the rankings to No. 33 after upsetting No. 11 Washington last Saturday, took the court this weekend to face No. 7 Stanford and No. 3 Cal.
Friday the Golden Bears swept the Wildcats, 7-0. After failing to win a doubles match, Arizona was blanked in singles play as well. The Wildcats won a total of one set on the afternoon in Berkeley, coming on the racquet of Roger Matalonga. The freshman lost his match to Balazs Verres in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0. Team captain No. 112 Carl Hagman had his four-match winning streak snapped against John Paul Fruttero, 6-3, 6-3.
Rain postponed Saturday's match versus the Cardinal. In the match rescheduled for Sunday, the Wildcats failed to win a set in singles play, falling to the Cardinal 6-1. Matalonga was forced to leave his match against No. 76 Sam Warburg in the second set, retiring to an injury.
After the match had already been decided, Arizona managed its only victory of the weekend by winning two out three doubles matches.
Arizona concludes its regular season this Saturday in Tucson versus in-state rival Arizona State.
Bibby joins U.S. squad
Former University of Arizona men's basketball All-American Mike Bibby was added to the U.S. Men's Senior National team, which was announced yesterday by USA Basketball.
Bibby is the sixth player on the roster for the United States club that will participate in the 2003 Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Bibby, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound guard currently playing for the Sacramento Kings, joined 18-year NBA all-star Karl Malone on the 2003 U.S. Men's Senior National Team roster. The team will participate in the 2003 FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Aug. 20-31 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Bibby is competing in his fifth NBA season since leaving Arizona following his sophomore season in 1998 and after earning the 1997 national championship as a freshman.
One of only six players in Arizona history to score more than 1,000 career points in two seasons, Bibby closed his two-year collegiate career averaging 15.4 points, 5.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game.
He still ranks 30th on the Arizona career points scored list (1,061), fourth in minutes played per game (32.4), eighth in steals (164), and ninth in three-point field goals (144) and 3-point field goal percentage (39.0).
Edgerson's Mobile squad wins ĪD-league' crown
Former University of Arizona men's basketball standout Eugene Edgerson helped his Mobile Revelers capture the 2003 National Basketball Development League championship Saturday.
Edgerson, who played at Arizona from 1996-2001, tallied seven points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots in the Revelers' 75-72 come-from-behind win over Fayetteville on Saturday.
Mobile had to earn the 2-1 series win, as the Revelers overcame a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit with a 14-2 run late in the game, which gave the title to head coach Sam Vincent.
In five playoff games this season with Mobile, Edgerson averaged 6.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and shot 53.8 percent from the field.
Now in his second year in the league, Edgerson was one of only two players on the Mobile roster to see action in all 50 regular season games. In those 50 appearances, Edgerson made 42 starts and averaged 6.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 24.2 minutes per game.
