Vandergeest's bat comes alive to bury Sun Devils again

Tempe, Ariz. öö After seeing senior shortstop Lovie Jung was intentionally walked for a fourth time, junior catcher Mackenzie Vandergeest licked her lips and preceded to punish Arizona State with a two run double in the seventh to lift the UA softball team to 4-2 win at ASU.

No. 1 Arizona (42-4, 11-1) swept the regular season series with No. 12 ASU (28-15, 5-6 Pac-10) thanks to Vandergeest's four RBIs, highlighted by the game-winning hit. The Arizona men's and women's tennis teams will try and keep their momentum going this weekend at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Ojai, Calif.

Both the No. 21 women and No. 38 men begin play today on the heels of upset victories last weekend over rival Arizona State to close out their respective seasons. The Pac-10 tournament will coincide with the 103rd annual Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. [Read article]

Grand Canyon stuns baseball in Phoenix, 4-0

The way things are going lately, the Arizona baseball team is probably glad its non-conference schedule ends Monday.

Tuesday night, the Wildcats (28-15) were shut out for the first time all season in a 4-0 upset loss to Grand Canyon (30-23), eight days after losing in the ninth inning at home to their last non-conference foe ÷ and Monday's opponent ÷ Sacramento State.

The GCU Antelopes, a NCAA Division II team, collected just four hits in the game, but they came at the right times and plated four runs. The Antelope pitching staff did the rest, holding the Arizona lineup to just three hits while striking out 14. [Read article]
