Unheralded French graduate student emerges as one of nations top tennis players

Emilie Scribot has breathed life back into the University of Arizona's women's tennis team.

In her first season in Tucson, and in the United States for that matter, the native of France has taken her upstart Wildcats to new heights. Sunday in Ojai, Calif., Scribot played a crucial role in landing Arizona its first Pac-10 trophy in 10 years, defeating the likes of conference powerhouses No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 California and No. 5 Southern California. The wide world of UA sports

It's been quite a tango this year.

Arizona had a football team that looked like it might as well be playing hopscotch instead of pigskin, a basketball team that was near-perfect at times and near-disastrous at others, and a women's basketball player who towered over the competition.

Hats off to Hollowell

Chalk up another award for pitcher Alicia Hollowell.

The fast-pitch freshman phenom was named as the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for April 21-27.

The UA freshman picked up her fourth Pac-10 weekly accolade this season after comprising a 3-0 record and a 1.83 ERA against the Oregon schools.

In 23 innings of work, Hollowell struck out 30 batters and picked up her 10th double-digit strikeout performance with 12 Ks against Oregon State on Sunday. [Read article]

Golf in 2nd at Pac-10 championships

Barnes and the men's golf team moved into second place yesterday at the 2003 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Golf Championships after posting their lowest total of the tournament.

Arizona, which entered the day in fourth place, posted a 364 (+4) total and stands in second place after three rounds with a 1,104 (+24) total. It was the second-lowest team total of the day. The Wildcats trail tournament-leader UCLA by 23 strokes heading into today's final round. UCLA's third-round 355 (-5) tally is the only below-par round of the tournament to date. Stanford (1,109), Washington (1,114) and Arizona State (1,119) round out the top-five places. [Read article]
