Community building needed to prevent further atrocities

This letter is with respect to the horrible incident that occurred in the College of Nursing. Robert Stewart Flores Jr. stated, "The university is filled with too many people who are filled with hubris. They feel untouchable. Students are not given respect nor regard." I completely disagree. I must assert that my experiences at the UA have been nothing but positive. [Read article]

Canidate Endorsement: Mahoney has independence Arizona needs

For too long, Arizona has lacked strong, principled leadership. On Tuesday, voters will have the chance to elect a governor who will guide the state through trying times, inheriting a $1 billion-plus budget deficit. Independent Dick Mahoney, a self-proclaimed social progressive and fiscal conservative, is the best choice for Arizona and for the university system.

Former Secretary of State Mahoney ditched the Democratic party because of his frustration with the incredible political pull of lobbyists in the platforms of the two major parties. Yet, he is essentially the liberal candidate, advocating the state's restricted role as a means for social improvement. [Read article]

UA response to murders terrifying

It's been almost a week since the shootings here at the UA, and I'm wondering if we're still shocked. I suspect most of us have comfortably pushed Monday's events into a small corner of our brains reserved for the horrors of reality we'd rather not consider.

These types of things hit us hard at first, then seem to drop almost entirely out of our consciousness. We become numb, first to the latest tragedy, then to tragedy in general. Eventually, we barely bat an eyelash at the news of school shootings or burning towers crashing to the ground. We'd just rather not think about it. But we should, and think hard. [Read article]
