After a 7-3 loss to No. 1 Penn State (10-0) on Thursday, the No. 8 Arizona Icecats looked to redeem themselves against Delaware on Friday and Saturday.
The Icecats (4-3) and Blue Hens (8-1) split the weekend set at a game each, with UA losing a hard fought match to Delaware in the opener, 4-3 in overtime.
"It was a solid weekend by a young team, going to play two undefeated teams," Icecats head coach Leo Golembiewski said. " I'm really proud of the guys to come back like that against Delaware in that third game."
Sophomore Goaltender Bryan Aronchick regained his usual form, despite the loss, stopping 44 of 48 shots in the loss.
After goals by freshman forward Cole Dunlop, freshman defenseman Mike Pelletier and junior forward Andrew Fredericks, UA could not convert on its four overtime scoring chances. Delaware took the game on a shot from the point that was deflected twice before slipping past Aronchick, giving the first game to the Blue Hens.
In the second game, the Icecats redeemed themselves, playing one of their most complete games all season, earning a 4-2 victory in the last leg of their three game road trip over the previously unbeaten Blue Hens.
Aronchick was chosen player of the game in goal, tallying 33 saves, while Dunlop again was a force, scoring early in the contest for the Icecats.
Delaware held on to a 2-1 lead midway through the third period, when Arizona sophomores Don Holtz and Nick Woods, along with junior Matt Naylor, each added late third-period goals, preserving the 4-2 win.
Holtz notched two goals and an assist during the road trip, while Naylor added a goal and two assists of his own.
Dating back to UA's 12-3 blowout of Utah State on Nov. 2, Dunlop is currently riding a four-game goal-scoring streak, after only his first seven games in an Icecat uniform. Dunlop finished the trip with three goals and an assist.
"Cole sure had a great weekend," Golembiewski said.
Golembiewski was most impressed with the defensive presence shown by his team during the road trip.
Along with Aronchick defensively, the Icecats had a solid weekend from senior captain Bill Pardue, who added two assists on the road trip.
"(Pardue) played the most solid 3 games as an I've seen him play as an Icecat." Golembiewski said.
Next up for the Icecats, Colorado State will visit Tucson for a two-game set on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16. The puck drops for both games at 7:30 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center.
