Icecat standout Matt ÎNails' Naylor has talent, toughness and the drive of his mother motivating him to excel

His teammates call him "Nails." Sure, it's a shortened version of his last name ÷ Naylor ÷ but that does not diminish its significance in regard to the way Icecat senior Matt Naylor plays the game of hockey.

photo Basketball Notes: Walton to return; Stoudamire still out

After returning to practice on Saturday, senior forward Luke Walton said yesterday that his sprained ankle is back to 95 percent and he will start tomorrow against the Nike Elite team.

"For the most part, (the ankle) felt good," Walton said. "I was a little more winded than I should be, but my conditioning will come back in the next day or two in practice."

photo Quarterback gives game ball to coach

As Jason Johnson was leaving the field Saturday after the Wildcats' 52-41 win against California, he grabbed a football from his team's sideline.

It wasn't a memento of what could be his biggest win as the starting quarterback at Arizona, but rather it was a gift for his coach John Mackovic.

Johnson presented the "game ball" ÷ which is traditionally given to the best player of the game ÷ to his coach just five days after some of Johnson's teammates said he should be fired, which led to a public apology the next day by the second-year UA coach. [Read article]

Lopez signs 11-man recruiting class

Nation's No. 2 prospect highlights next year's bunch of Îhigh-caliber' UA players

The second year of the Andy Lopez era witnessed a giant step toward rebuilding the Wildcat baseball program after 11 recruits all signed letters-of-intent last Friday.

Lopez's class hails from Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts and Texas.

"The foundation of our second recruiting class here at Arizona is in place," Lopez said. "The high-caliber players that signed with us are an indication that we're moving in the right direction toward getting Arizona baseball back on top." [Read article]
