Guest Commentary: Landscape architecture excells in Îpublic impact'
Just as I was getting over the budget cuts at the University of Arizona, now it appears that my program may be eliminated altogether. The proposal sent out yesterday by the university will eliminate the School of Landscape Architecture. While it has now become personal, I wonder how many other worthwhile programs are being cast in a light that will make their elimination seem less the educational castration that it is. I see numerous problems with the proposal's logic.

Participate in debate over Îexcellence'
The 16 initial cuts proposed Tuesday by President Pete Likins and Provost George Davis illustrate that the university is moving in the right direction with its Focused Excellence plan, both in its targets and in its approach.
And to make sure the plan is carried out properly it is important for individuals to be involved in the debate and dialogue surrounding excellence.
Our leaders seem to be embracing open government and are allowing for student, faculty and staff to be involved and active participants as excellence evolves.

Smashed windows covered in red spray paint. A train tunnel filled with anti-G8 slogans. Happy Meals. Pizza Hut. Starbucks. Kentucky Fried Chicken. Coca-Cola. Nestle. Windows 2000. Jennifer Aniston.
When Americans venture outside the boundaries of a country defined by nightly sitcoms, one-sided news, consumption, political whitewash and stock prices running constantly across the bottom of the screen, many are surprised to arrive in another country and discover that the United States of America had her feet planted there many years before.
