photo For Allen, it's all in the wrists

Junior pitcher puts surgery on hold to contribute to Wildcats

She strolls up to the mound with a green ribbon in her hair that she's worn since her sophomore year in high school. She picks up the ball and, as she releases the pitch, the cyst or abnormality in junior Wendy Allen's left carpal tunnel hurts.

She feels as if she's been shocked. A shooting pain begins in her elbow and extends downward to her fingers, so intense that at times Allen's scared to finish her pitch. [Read article]

Men's golf team set for Hawaii

The Arizona men's golf team, fresh off its first win of the spring, is beginning play this morning in Hawaii at the John Burns Invitational.

The team, ranked fifth in the recent Precept GCAA Coaches Poll, will start play at the 6,712-yard, par-72 layout as the highest ranked team in the field. Arizona is one of only four teams in the field that are ranked in the nation's top 20, joining UNLV (8), New Mexico (16), and Auburn (20). [Read article]

Coaches agree on Gardner's value

If Jason Gardner is going to win Pac-10 Player of the Year, it's going to take some convincing of some of the coaches around the conference.

The early favorite for the award has to be between California's Joe Shipp and Arizona State's Ike Diogu, but the senior point guard for the No. 1 Wildcats definitely has the vote of his coaching staff.

"Last year, the critics said he was scoring too much, this year not enough," UA associate head coach Jim Rosborough said. "Certainly (Joe) Shipp has had a good year, and (Ike) Diogu at ASU. But here we're sitting at 12-1 through a very tough stretch of games. I don't know what else (Jason) could do. I wouldn't trade him for anyone and everyone on our staff would say the same thing." photo Negatives turn out positive

The women's basketball team is starting to resemble more of a M*A*S*H unit than a team vying for a spot in the NCAA tournament.

On Monday, three players had X-rays taken and all came up negative.

Freshman center Shawntinice Polk hurt her right ankle in Sunday's 78-64 win over USC. Polk walked off the court gingerly, but returned with 12 minutes to go in the second half. She scored 14 points and added nine rebounds in the Wildcats' win. [Read article]

Women's water polo sweeps openers

To start off what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the women's water polo team won all four of its games at NAU this past weekend.

The Wildcats (4-0) blew out Colorado School of Mines 14-0 and Colorado State's B team 18-3 on Saturday. Sunday, the games were closer and the UA had to overcome deficits. After trailing 3-0, Arizona beat Colorado State's A team 14-6 and edged the host Lumberjacks 14-13. [Read article]
