Offense

Jason Johnson Ð quarterback - Sr. Ð 6-2, 215 Ð Enters the 2002 as the Wildcats' No. 1 quarterback. Johnson started all 11 games last year and was named an honorable mention All-Pac-10 player. He threw for 2,347 yards and 19 touchdowns last season as a junior. His 169 completions rank fourth on the UA all-time list and his 19 touchdowns in 2001 was the second best mark in a single season for a UA quarterback.

Clarence Farmer Ð halfback - Jr. Ð 6-1, 219 Ð The fiery tailback is being considered a Heisman candidate by some experts entering the 2002 season. In Farmer's sophomore season he led the Pac-10 in rushing yards with 1,229, the fourth best in school history, and was named the team's MVP and Most Valuable Offensive Player. Farmer was named to the Playboy pre-season All-America team in the offseason. The Houston native had 10 touchdowns and averaged 111.7 yards per game in 2001.

Joey Willrodt - fullback Ð Sr. Ñ 6-2, 240 Ñ Willrodt went from being a walk-on defensive end in spring practice to the starting fullback. Willrodt does have college football experience at Moorpark Junior College in Calif. He was a four-year letterman in football at Palma High School in Salinas, Calif. He also lettered in basketball and track. He enjoys playing golf, boxing and traveling.

Bobby Wade Ð wide receiver - Sr. Ð 5-11, 195 Ð Wade enters his senior season as one of the most prolific pass catchers in UA history. The three-year starter will be quarterback Jason Johnson's go-to-guy in the air in 2002. He and Johnson connected eight times in 2001 for touchdowns. He finished second in the Pac-10 in receptions in 2001 with 62. He had his best game in the final game of 2001 against ASU where he caught a career high 11 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown.

Andrae Thurman Ð wide receiver - Jr. Ð 5-11, 185 Ð The UA coaching staff is looking for a breakout season for Thurman who should start alongside his close friend Bobby Wade in 2002. He caught 30 passes for 470 yards in 2001. He was third on the team in all-purpose yards with 757. Thurman went to Westview High School in Avondale and caught 92 passes for 1,583 yards in his final two seasons.

James Hugo Ð tight end - Sr. Ð 6-6, 260 Ð Enters fall camp as the No. 1 tight end on the depth chart. He played in 10 games in 2001 and started in five catching nine balls for 56 yards and one touchdown. Hugo hails from Conroe, Texas where he played at Oak Ridge High School. His nickname is "Toge" (toe-gey).

Keoki Fraser Ð center - So. Ð 6-2, 292 Ð Fraser gives the Wildcats experience up the middle for years to come. The sophomore started at center last season for a couple games when the now departed Steven Grace moved to guard. He was one of Arizona's top recruits in 2000 out of Kailua High School in Hawaii. His brother Keoni played for the Wildcats from 1998-2001.

Makoa Freitas Ð left guard - Sr. Ð 6-4, 296 Ð Freitas has seen it all in his five-year UA career. He has gone from a 12-1 season and a win in the Holiday Bowl to three disappointing seasons without making a bowl game. Freitas will bring leadership and experience to a rather young offensive line. He has started 25 games in his career. He earned honorable All-Pac-10 honors in 2001. Makoa is another highly touted recruit from Hawaii. His brother Makai played for the Wildcats as an offensive lineman and long snapper until 2000. He will miss the first game of the season against NAU with a wrist injury.

Brandon Phillips Ð right tackle - Jr. Ð 6-7, 285 Ð After switching from defensive tackle to offensive tackle in spring ball, Phillips has positioned himself to start in 2002. He played in 11 games in 2001 at right tackle. Phillips was named the team's Most Improved Offensive Player on the last day of spring drills. He was recruited for his size. He played at Corona del Sol High School in Tempe.

Chris Johnson Ð left tackle - So. Ð 6-3, 301 Ð He has won the starting role at left tackle mostly impart to an injury to Darren Safranek. Johnson played in eight games in 2001. Johnson was a high school teammate of Reggie Sampay at North Shore High School in Houston. His brother Joseph plays football at Central Missouri University.

Reggie Sampay Ð right guard - Jr. Ð 6-3, 275 Ð Despite being a little shorter than what head coach John Mackovic would like, Sampay makes up for that with his strength. He played when he was a true freshman and has improved greatly since then. His versatility should be a big plus for UA. Played high school football at North Shore High School in Houston.


Defense

Fata Avegalio Ð defensive end - So. Ð 6-3, 225 Ð After an injury plagued 2001, Avegalio is healthy and looking to get back to form in 2002. He played in eight games for the Wildcats last year as a redshirt freshman. Avegalio comes from Leone in American Samoa. He played in only two regular season games in 1999 at Leone before suffering an injury that ended his season. He was the only 1999 high school football league athlete in America Samoa to be actively recruited in the United States and Hawaii. His father Failautusi graduated from Brigham Young and his mother Linda earned a degree at Northeast Missouri State.

Carlos Williams Ð defensive tackle Ð So. Ð 6-4, 291 Ð After playing in nine games as a true freshman in 2001, he comes back in 2002 as only one of three letterman on the defensive line. Williams is a converted tight end and has seemed to find a home at his new position. The Denver native attended Montebello High School where he was a four year letterman. He was the Wildcats lone recruit from a state other than Arizona, California and Texas in 2001.

Young Thompson Ð defensive tackle - Sr. Ð 6-2, 298 Ð One of the most vocal players on the Wildcats defense, Thompson brings experience to a young defensive front. He earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors last season. Thompson played in all 11 games in 2001. He hails from Pago Pago, American Samoa where he prepped at Samoana High School and was an honor role student. His first cousin is Jack "The Throwin' Samoan" Thompson who was a star quarterback at Washington State and later the Cincinnati Bengals.

Marcus Smith Ð defensive end - Fr. Ð 6-5, 220 Ð One of the only true freshman to earn a starting nod on opening day, Smith comes to Arizona highly recriutied. His kid brings the entire package to the desert. After attending Misson Bay High School in San Diego he earned All-County Honors. His father Edward was in the U.S. Navy and his mother went to UCSD. Smith worked at Sea World during his senior year of high school.

Ray Wells Ð rover Ð Sr. Ð 6-1, 224 Ð Wells has found his spot on the field and it will be at the rover position. After starting all 11 games in 2001 as a junior he finished the year with 45 tackles, two sacks and one interception. He transferred to UA from San Diego Mesa College where he was a linebacker. Wells also competes on the track team at Arizona. He attended Mt. Miguel High School in Spring Valley, Calif.

Lance Briggs Ð middle linebacker Ð Sr. Ð 6-2, 243 Ð Briggs is one of the top players in the Pac-10 if not the country. He is on the 2002 Lombardi Award preseason list. In just two seasons as a linebacker he already has made 206 tackles and led the Wildcats both seasons. He was named to the All-Pac-10 team the last two years. Briggs finished second in the Pac-10 in tackles in 2001. The former fullback made the switch to linebacker in 2001 and the move has definitely paid off. He hails from Sacramento, Calif., where he attended Elk Grove High School.

Joe Siofele Ð weak side linebacker Ð Jr. Ð 6-2, 248 Ð After an off-season where his brother was killed in a car accident Siofele wants nothing more than a successful junior year. All indications in fall camp point that that can happen. After playing in eight games for the Wildcats in 2001 he finished the year with 21 tackles and two sacks. Siofele was one of the top recruits for Dick Tomey in 1999 and where he was sought after by Nebraska, Colorado and Washington. He attended St. Louis High School in Honolulu.

Clay Hardt Ð KAT Ð Jr. Ð 6-1, 185 Ð Hardt is finally getting the chance to start after two years as a backup. The long-haired safety has played all over the Wildcats secondary in the past. He was the team's top special teams player in 2001. His best game came against Oregon State where he recorded four tackles. He is from nearby Marana and attended Marana High School. He was KVOA-TV's player of the year.

Jarvie Worcester Ð free safety Ð Sr. Ð 6-0, 205 Ð Worcester is the returning starting free safety after starting all 11 games in 2001. He finished the year with 70 tackles which was second on the team. He had a career-best 16 tackles versus Stanford. In 2000 he earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 honors. Worcester came to Arizona from La Jolla High School in California. He is a leader in a youth group called The Gathering.

Michael Jolivette Ð cornerback Ð Jr. Ð 5-11, 179 Ð Jolivette might not only be the Wildcat's top coverman but also one of the best in all of college football. He earned honorable All-Pac-10 honors as a sophomore after earning first team All-American honors as a freshman. In two seasons he has 10 career interceptions. His five interceptions in 2000 equaled the team total. He attended North Shore High School in Houston, Texas.

Darrell Brooks Ð cornerback Ð Fr. Ð 6-0, 191 Ð After earning "newcomer" honors in camp, he also earned himself a starting job alongside Jolivette in the secondary. Brooks brings size and can jump. He attended Moreno Valley High School in California. He played free safety and wide receiver in high school. His brother Leslie Brooks Jr., played football for UNLV.
