Streaking Cats hit Big Sky Country

It's a good thing Montana adopted a state speed limit in 1999, because that might be the only way to slow down the UA soccer team.

Hot off a three-game win streak, the Wildcats (4-3-0) strap up against Montana at 5 p.m. today and against UNLV at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

For assistant coach Lisa Oyen, it's a trip home. As a Grizzly, Oyen lead Montana to the 1997 Big Sky Championship while earning MVP honors from both the conference and her team.

"Certainly, that's a place she holds to heart," UA head coach Dan Tobias said. "But she's done a great job with the team and she's just as excited as the rest of us."

The Running Rebels make an appearance in Missoula Sunday after battling Northern Arizona to a 1-1 tie last Sunday in Sin City.

The Grizzles have struggled to a record of 2-5-1 this year. UM head coach Betsy Duerksen is wary of the Wildcats.

"(Arizona) has good speed. They're good competitors and they're well organized," she said.

Montana played then-No. 16 California on Aug. 31, posting a 1-1 tie.

The last time the Grizzles and Wildcats took the field together was in 1997, when Oyer led Montana to a 2-0 victory. Montana leads the all-time series 3-1, outscoring the Wildcats 12-3 in its three victories.

This season, the Wildcats hold a plus-3 goal advantage over their opponents. Sophomore Mallory Miller (three goals, two assists) has kicked her way next to junior Candice Wilks (four goals) on the stat sheet. Both lead the team with eight points.

Even with Wilks still ailing from an injury that sidelined her last weekend, Tobias said he is not worried about any potential lack of offense.

"I think the team has done a very good job focusing on who is able to play," Tobias said. "I think this past weekend gave them the confidence to know that they can perform, no matter who is on the field."

Miller is a prime candidate for a flurry of goals, racking up 25 shots on the season ÷ 11 ahead of sophomore Lisa Kosena.

Until last weekend, the UA offense had been struggling to score goals, despite outshooting every opponent it had faced this season. Tobias said he is happy to see the team turn those opportunities into goals.

"There's always the two-fold thing when it comes to scoring goals: Are you creating chances and are those chances high-quality chances?" he asked rhetorically. "The answer to both of those is Îyes.'"

"I think the positive is that the team is recognizing that as long as we continue to create high-quality chances, we're going to score our fair share of goals," the first-year Arizona coach added. "The learning curve is just about learning to put teams away when we have the chance."

Wilks has not played in the last two games for the Wildcats, but did make the trip with the team after practicing this week. Tobias said Wilks wants to play, but her status will be a game-time decision.

"Candice is day-to-day," he said. "She did travel with us because (team doctors) said there is a strong chance she could play."

UNLV is on an unbeaten streak of its own, albeit only two games. The Rebels, however, have also been shut out three times already this season.

In the net for UA, sophomore Natalie Juarez has clocked in for 360 minutes with 11 saves and one shutout.

The Wildcats and Rebels last met 732 days ago in Tucson, with then-freshman Wilks scoring two second-half goals en route to a 4-1 Arizona victory.
