UNLV ends soccer's unbeaten streak
Despite out-shooting UNLV 14-7, the UA women's soccer team was edged by the Rebels, 2-1, in a neutral-site contest played in Missoula, Mont., on Saturday.
The loss ended a four-game unbeaten streak for the Wildcats, sending them to 4-4-1 on the year, while UNLV improved to 6-3-1.
All three of the contest's goals were scored in the first half. UNLV struck first with a goal off a long-range free kick in the 13th minute.
Junior midfielder Vanesha Bailey answered for the Wildcats at 24:22 off a double-assist from forwards Candice Wilks and Kelly Nelson.
The game winner was another long-range shot for the Rebels, scored with just under six minutes remaining in the first half.
Neither team scored in the second half, although the Wildcats held a definitive 6-2 edge in shots for the period.
The loss came on the heels of the Wildcats' 1-1 tie with Montana Friday. Sophomore midfielder Mallory Miller scored the lone Arizona goal against the Grizzlies, her fourth in as many games.
Cheseret misses title by 2 seconds; Men take sixth in Minneapolis
Freshman Robert Cheseret is proving to be a gem for the men's cross country team this season, leading the Wildcats by finishing second overall in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis on Saturday.
Cheseret covered the 8,000-meter course in 24:00, finishing only two seconds behind BYU's Kip Kangogo. Kangogo is considered one of the favorites to win the national title in November.
Junior Jonah Maiyo was the second Wildcat across the finish line on Saturday. The junior college transfer finished ninth overall in 24:32. Senior Matt McInvale was the third Wildcat finisher, claiming 68th place in 25:27.
The Wildcat men continued their success with a sixth-place showing among a strong field of competitors. The task was a bit tougher for the UA women, as they finished 21st in the overall team standings.
Junior Beth Hoge led the Wildcat women's squad, finishing 72nd in 22:15 on the 6,000-meter course. Sophomore Adrienne Goeller was the next Wildcat across the line. She finished 105th with a time of 22:41. Senior Nicole Gurnicz was 122nd, crossing the line at 22:50 as the third Wildcat finisher.
