Commentary: Happy new year, in August

I guess the only thing I could do yesterday, in the midst of Noah's resurrection, was sit around next to my flat-screened best friend and ponder what could be this year.

Could we actually see our football team, ranked 72 in some pre-season polls and 10th in the Pac-10 (hey, at least we're not last, right? Wait a minute·) actually win a few games?

The chances? Well, lets just say I'd bet my vertical was higher than Hassan Adams before I'd bet we win more than three games.

The skinny on our faithful Wildcat football is that out of 11 games this year, seven are with teams ranked in the top-28 and if you've been around long enough you know our chances of a bowl game are as non-existent as Jenna Jameson's virginity.

Don't take anything away from our football program, they work as hard as any program and when most freshmen receive their death sentence (or diploma), we'll have made a bowl game.

So with the rain still sliding down my window, we will have to wait and see.

Does our basketball team, after having one of the most decorated teams of any college program since the Bobby-Grant-Christian extravaganza at the other Devil school, have a shot at making a legitimate title run?

I would love it if we could just make it to the Sweet 16 again. I know it's almost blasphemous to not hope for a national championship, but we've lost four guys in the last year that would have impacted our team, one being the building block for our freshman class.

With the two big male sports out of the way, and in the wake of "PlayMakers," the first male-focused show since Baywatch, here are my playmakers for the year.

Nic Costa (Football) ÷ Our sophomore quarterback has the potential to be a better Jason Johnson, and with freshman QB Ryan O'Hara right by his side, Costa will have to really shine to get the nod all year.

Andre Iguadala and Hassan Adams (Men's Basketball) ÷ Sure, it's a cop-out to put two guys down, but these two sophomores have more talent than the Olsen twins have stalkers. Even with Salim and Channing being juniors, I believe these two will make more of an impact on the court and one of them will be in the running for the All-American team.

Shawntinice Polk (W-basketball) ÷ Did you read her name? OK, enough said, she's one of the pre-season picks for the State Farm Wade Award, which honors the nation's top player, she was an All-American last year as a freshman, and would take any guy at the rec on any day at any time. If only she played football ·

Jeff Van Houten (baseball) ÷ The Pac-10 batting champ will have even more pressure on his hot bat after the team lost Brian Anderson. With a .413 batting average last year, I think he can handle it.

Alicia Hollowell (softball) ÷ The pitching ace will have another year of experience, and will impress more and more after a disappointing loss last year to California in the tournament.

Chris Nallen (men's golf) ÷ After finally getting out of Ricky Barnes' shadow over Tucson, the senior not only will win three tournaments, but also is my pick to win the Ben Hogan Award. A finalist last year, he only is improving and will play in the Walker Cup, the amateurs Ryder Cup or for you non-golfers, a.k.a. the Really-Good-Golfers-That-Don't-get-Money Cup.

Erica Blasberg (women's golf) ÷ The question isn't how good she'll do, it's how long she'll stay in Tucson. The sophomore won Freshman Player of the Year for the NCAA and Pac-10. She's made a name for herself not only with college players, but is believed to be the next Lorena Ochoa.

Monica Bisordi (Gymcats) ÷ Bisordi had the best year of anyone in 2003, and with Regionals being hosted in Tucson, look for her to top her 47 top-5s of last year.

Kim Glass (Volleyball) ÷ Glass and Blasberg lived together last year and both received Freshman of the Year honors. This year Glass leads a team that's ranked 10th at the time, and made it to the Sweet 16 last year. With Bre Ladd at her side, the volleyball team should be as impressive as ever.

With that said, let the kickoff begin. A year to come will only come too fast, and before you know, we'll only be remembering. Go to the football games, get in the basketball drawing (no riots, that's key), and if you're new, learn the words to "Bear Down" before it's too late.
