Last week, Wheeler was instrumental in getting Arizona women's hoops its first sweep of the Oregon schools on the road in three years. A Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Week candidate, Wheeler averaged 17 points per game in wins over Oregon and Oregon State, including a game-high 22 against the Ducks. [Read article]

photo Lloyd's extra year gives UA tennis new life

Watching from the sidelines was frustrating for Tom Lloyd last year, having to redshirt during his senior year because of a lower back injury that sidelined him for the season.

"It was brutal," Lloyd said. "I don't know how the coaches sit on the sidelines and watch these matches, because I sure had a hard time doing it last year. You feel for the guys out there, and you want to be out there grinding with them, but it's real tough to sit on the sidelines, especially your senior year." [Read article]

Men's Hoops Notes: Iguodala named to Wooden top 30 list

Since his arrival in Tucson, Andre Iguodala has become a fan favorite among the Old Pueblo faithful. Now, the sophomore forward is being recognized for his hard work on the court by the highest authority in college basketball.

Iguodala was among the nation's elite players selected by the NCAA on Monday to the annual John R. Wooden Award Midseason Top-30 list. He is the only Wildcat to be recognized by the committee that is expected to announce the award April 10. [Read article]

Football Notes: Stoops seeks heavy island recruitment

Though he came late in the recruiting process, Arizona football coaches are hoping that defensive tackles coach Mike Tuiasosopo will help reopen the Pacific Ocean's islands to the UA - a connection that disappeared under John Mackovic.

"His connection to the islands is a connection that we need to re-establish here at Arizona," said Arizona head coach Mike Stoops in his first address to the media since his hiring. [Read article]

Club Sports Notes: Synchronized swim takes lofty goals into '04 competition

The Arizona synchronized swim team heads into competition this season with lofty ambitions, which should come as no surprise after last year.

In 2003, the squad finished fifth nationally and competed alongside the U.S. Olympic team in the Senior Nationals competition, despite being the only club synchronized swim lineup in the nation to compete against varsity NCAA competition.

A host of newcomers make up this year's synchronized team. Six fresh faces join the eight-swimmer roster. But despite the rookie lineup, expectations have not been diminished, according to the team. [Read article]
