Men's Hoops: Cats survive at Washington State

The Wildcat men's basketball team narrowly escaped a sweep at the hands of the Washington schools, edging Washington State 61-57 on Saturday.

Junior center Channing Frye broke a 57-57 tie with a layup with just under a minute left to put the Wildcats (14-4, 6-3 Pacific 10 Conference) ahead for good. A pair of free throws by junior guard Salim Stoudamire with 14 seconds left iced the game for Arizona. [Read article]

ASU 68 - UA 60

Foul trouble on the road plagued the Wildcats again and stifled their impressive comeback against the Sun Devils Saturday in Tempe, as they fell 68-60 to their rivals.

The Wildcats (16-5, 8-2 Pacific 10 Conference) had the lead early due to the play of sophomore center Shawntinice Polk, who scored the first nine points for the UA. However, Polk and junior guard Dee-Dee Wheeler notched two fouls early, confining them to the bench for much of the first half. [Read article]

photo Disallowed goal looms large for UA in split

If their 3-1 loss to Arizona State on Saturday ends up costing them a chance to play in the tournament, the Arizona Icecats could easily blame it on a goal called back.

The No. 16 Icecats (11-10-2) had to settle for a weekend split against the Sun Devils (12-12-3) after Saturday's 3-1 loss in Glendale Arena. The UA appeared to go up 1-0 at the 14:54 mark in the first period when sophomore forward and captain Cole Dunlop hit a shot off the back of the net. But after the puck bounced back out of the net, the on-ice official disallowed it. [Read article]

Football: Stoops finalizes '04 staff

UA head coach Mike Stoops has added the final piece of the puzzle to his coaching staff, naming Joe Robinson defensive ends coach and special teams coordinator Friday.

Robinson, 43, brings over a decade of experience as either a recruiting or special teams coordinator, and has coached on both sides of the ball. He was special teams coordinator and linebackers coach at Central Florida last season and at Houston in 2002, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana Tech in 2001, and he spent seven seasons with Southern Mississippi from 1992 to 1998. photo UA Sports Briefs: Gymcats post second-best road showing ever in win

The visiting Wildcats' domination Saturday night followed the Friday night dinner at the McCabes' house. UA senior Andi McCabe's family hosted the Arizona gymnastics team (5-1, 1-1 Pacific 10 Conference) for a meal before the returning senior competed in front of her family.

The result was absolute control over host Illinois-Chicago (0-8). For the first time on the road, the Arizona gymnastics team tallied a score of 49 or better in every event to sweep the Flames, 196.525-194.450. [Read article]
